The Difference Between an Acknowledgement and a Jurat

2026-06-29
By Expedited Mobile Notary Team

When you hire a notary, you will likely need either an Acknowledgement or a Jurat. What is the difference?

Acknowledgement

An acknowledgement ensures the signer's identity and that they are signing willingly. You can sign the document beforehand, but you must declare to the notary that the signature is yours.

Jurat

A Jurat is used for affidavits. The signer must swear an oath or affirm under penalty of perjury that the contents of the document are true. You MUST sign a Jurat in the physical presence of the notary after taking the oath.
